Skilak Lake sits on the Skilak Lake Wildlife Recreation Area which is part of the almost two million acre Kenai National Wildlife Refuge. The lake offers activities for every visitor including camping, hiking, nature watching, fishing, swimming, and much more.

There are seven hiking trails of varying difficulties located within the recreation area. Seven camping sites are also located inside the area, two of which are on the shores of Skilak Lake. Located on the upper and lower parts of the lake are two boat launches open to the public. There are also three public cabins within the recreation area.
